Southern Illinois Volleyball Officials Association

MINUTES:  OCT. 18, 2009

The meeting was held at Ron’s Lounge in Lebanon

Meeting was called to order at 5:05 p.m.

In attendance:  Connie Frierdich, Barb Maue, Paul Cermak, Bill Wood, Cathy Toenjes, Jeff Toenjes, Tom Sullivan, George Hass, Brian Dinges,  Andy Glauber, Mitch Boyce, George Davis, Holly Luenemann, Bill Isaac, Gina Fey, and Jim Rudy

Barb Maue read the minutes from the last meeting, held on Sept. 20, 2009.

Connie Frierdich gave the treasurer’s report.  The balance as of this date was $1013.96.  Connie also reminded members that she has whistles and calendars for anyone who may need to purchase these items.

Under Old Business – Discussion was held on the Sportsmanship Banners.  Since the association cannot get the original banners back from Todd Cook, Paul Cermak suggested that we purchase new ones.  It was decided to purchase not only 2 banners to replace the ones from last year, but go ahead and purchase additional ones for 2009 and 2010.  Purchasing banners for the boys’ season was discussed briefly, but nothing was decided.  This was tabled for a later date.

It was announced that the next meeting will be held on Wed., Nov. 18th at Schiappa’s Restaurant in O’Fallon.  The by-law committee will meet at 5:30, followed by the full membership meeting at 6:30.

Under New Business – Sue Hinrichsen will be retiring at the end of June, 2010.  The association has been asked to make a monetary donation toward a gift for her.  Paul suggested that the association contribute $100.  The members agreed with this amount.  Since Dave Gannaway will also be retiring, it was also decided to match that amount in the event that a request to donate for him is received.

A brief discussion was held on officials wearing jewelry.  The literature that comes to us from the state no longer addresses this.

Bill Wood reminded the members that the official volleyball for the post-season is the one manufactured by Baden.

Some of the members mentioned that they have had some problems with too many members of a team being on the court to shake hands and huddle before the match begins.  They were reminded that only the 6 starting players and the libero are allowed to do this.  With the reality of the N1H1 virus, the decision to shake hands or not is an individual decision and not necessarily a mandated action.

Discussion was also held on the protocol when it comes to proper equipment on non-players who are helping with pre-match warm-ups.  There are numerous problems with teams not following the rule.  Members were reminded to make sure that the rules are followed concerning this matter.

Bill Wood mentioned that his email he sent to Sue Hinrichsen concerning the confusing questions on the Part 1 test was not answered.

Online ratings came up in discussion.  Some members were concerned about how few ratings they were receiving.  This might be due to the fact that some coaches and officials wait until the end of the season to do this.

A rule clarification on attempting versus actually blocking a serve was discussed.  Is it just the attempt to block that is illegal, or does the block have to be completed?  This needs to be researched.  Members were also reminded that attacking a serve can be done several ways, including simply setting the ball back over the net.

Bill suggested buying pink whistles for association members to have for Volley for the Cure matches.  It was also suggested that the association make a donation to a cancer cause.  This was tabled for the next meeting.

Since assignments had not been released as of this meeting, Bill suggested that the members use the email network to communicate to others where their post-season assignments are.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:05 pm.
